Pauline
Everything I know about fashion I learnt from Project Runway and Youtube sewing tutorials. This collection is a confused composite of children’s clothing and bottom-of-the-range bridal wear. Elasticated waistbands, wash’n’wear fabrics and asymmetrical diamante detailing. I decided to make white clothes recently after someone told me all the North Shore private school girls are wearing white on white. I got this picture of a poodle digitally embroidered on double thickness polar fleece at one of those places in the mall. The women accidentally positioned it the wrong way around on the pattern piece but it’s better anyway. Like, more punk, but not in that dated safety pins and dirt kinda way. My girlfriend used to live with this guy who wore all these novelty printed satin boxers shorts. The best ones had a pattern of skating boarding snakes and said “BEWARE OF COBRA.” I can’t stop thinking about how beautiful that fabric would be as a draped dress.
Pauline continues to take different forms, presenting itself as a collective, a brand, an attitude. Its members work collaboratively across the disciplines of performance, sculpture, painting, and fashion, and have been known to expand temporarily to host other artists for an event, a situation or an idea. This ongoing project was initiated in 2011 while is members were studying at Elam School of Fine Arts. |
